A Florida man was arrested on Hilton Head Island early Wednesday after he allegedly tried to break into an ATM.

Deputies responding to a Suntrust Bank alarm about 1:30 a.m. found a man leaving the area near the ATM, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. The machine was damaged, as if someone had tried to force it open, Sherrif's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

Deputies on foot lost the suspect but stopped a vehicle leaving the area of the Lafayette Place bank.

Inside, Clifford Lee Jean, 33, of Lakeland, Fla., was reportedly sweaty, out of breath and wearing dirty clothes, with black gloves on the front passenger seat and a screwdriver in the back seat, McIntosh said.

Security footage appeared to show Jean trying unsuccessfully to break into the ATM. Jean was also charged with possession of marijuana. He is in jail pending a bond hearing, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log.

An investigation is ongoing, McIntosh said.
