A driver and construction worker were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday on Fording Island Road.
A vehicle driven by Wendy Whalen, 56, had merged off Okatie Highway about 1:10 p.m. when it struck a construction barrel, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Bridget Wyant. The Beaufort resident overcorrected and lost control of her car, traveling into a closed construction lane and striking a construction worker, 56-year-old Bobby Lee Harris Jr. of Ladson, according to Wyant.
Whalen's car also collided with a parked pickup-truck, which then struck another parked vehicle, Wyant said.
Whalen, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was removed from her car and transported by ambulance to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Harris was flown to the hospital by helicopter, according to Wyant. Whalen was in good condition Wednesday night, a hospital spokesman said. There was no new information on Harris' condition, the spokesman said.
Charges are pending while the S.C. Highway Patrol investigates the wreck.
