Prep Roundup, Oct. 22: Hilton Head High girls take 3rd at Lower State golf meet

Class 3-A Lower State championship: The Hilton Head Island High School girls golf team placed third out of 18 teams Tuesday at the Lower State championship to advance to next week's state tournament.

St. James won Tuesday's meet -- held at the Hackler Course in Conway -- with a team score of 332. Airport was second with 346 and Hilton Head High was third at 362. The top eight teams advanced to the Class 3-A state championship, which will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Black Bear Country Club in Longs.

Hartsville's Eden Howard shot a 74 to set a course record and earn medalist honors.

Meredith Wipper had the low score for Hilton Head High, carding an 85. Madeline Prince and Megan Weldy each shot 91, and Grace Harkins came in at 107.

The third-place Lower State finish follows up the Seahawks' recent Region 8-AAA victory, their second straight region title. Wipper, Prince, Weldy and Lois Anderson earned all-region honors for Hilton Head High.

Bluffton 2, Ashley Ridge 1: The Bobcats (34-13-2) won 25-19, 23-25, 25-14 to close their Region 8-AAAA schedule with a perfect 10-0 mark.

The Bobcats play next in the Class 4-A playoffs on Tuesday. Assuming the higher seeds win, Bluffton would host Tuesday and Thursday before finally hitting the road the next week.

Bishop England 2, Battery Creek 0; Battery Creek 2, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 0: The Dolphins split their final tri-match of the season, falling 10-25, 10-25 to the Bishops and beating the Jaguars 25-18, 25-18 to finish 8-6 in Region 6-AA.

The Dolphins, who will soon find out their playoff opponent, honored seniors Aujena Mungin, Rebekkah Scott, Autumn Gravel, Vanessa Stanley and Kristen Haberkorn on Senior Night.
