Hilton Head Island moves to No. 2 in volleyball poll; JPII wins first middle school volleyball title

After Hilton Head Christian Academy's run in the SCISAA Class 3-A volleyball tournament this past weekend, the Eagles' Stevie DeSimone was selected to play in the SCISAA 3-A North-South game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Heathwood Athletic Center.

The Eagles (16-12) lost 25-18, 25-11 Saturday to eventual state champion Ashley Hall.

DeSimone, a junior, led all of SCISAA this season with 472 kills, 123 digs and 56 aces.


The Hilton Head Island volleyball team is up to No. 2 in the 3-A rankings in this week's S.C. High School Volleyball Association Coaches Poll.

The Seahawks (23-5), who will host a first-round playoff match next week, are behind only North Myrtle Beach.

Whale Branch is No. 7 in the 1-A rankings.


The John Paul II middle school volleyball team earned the first trophy in school history this past weekend, winning first place in the Catholic Diocese State Volleyball Tournament hosted Saturday by Summerville Catholic.

The Golden Warriors, coached by Sean Custer, beat Summerville Catholic 2-0 (25-18, 26-24) in the semifinals and St. Mary's of Aiken 2-0 (24-20, 25-12) in the finals.

John Paul II was led in the finals by 8th grader Emma Wyman (seven kills, nine aces, six assists), 8th grader Gabi Custer (four kills, seven aces, 12 digs), 8th grader Megan Briody (nine kills, five aces, 10 assists) and 7th grader Colleton Graves (five kills, seven aces, seven digs).

Also participating for the Golden Warriors were Ava Slusne, Mary Grace Nimmer, Kylie Puplava, Kylie Stewart and Jenna Brenner.
