The SPHINX VIRTUOSI at Carnegie Hall 2011 PERFORMANCE

The Sphinx Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra

SUBMITTED

The Sphinx Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra will perform at 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, 14 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head.

The Sphinx Organization has worked to create opportunities for black and Latino musicians to perform and grow. The orchestra is a conductorless 18-member ensemble comprised of veterans and winners of the annual Sphinx competition in Detriot, a contest for black and Latino string musicians.

The group's program, titled "Dialogue Between Two Eras," features music by baroque composers and 20th-century composers who were influenced by them, including Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who was dubbed "the African Mahler" in some circles, and Argentine star Astor Piazolla, who was heavily influenced by Johann Sebastian Bach, whose music also is on the concert.

Tickets are $40. Details: 843-842-2787 or www.artshhi.com
