Sheriff's Office: Man drowns on Hilton Head Island after drinking alcohol

October 20, 2013

The body of an adult man was found on Hilton Head Island at about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, the victim of an apparent accidental drowning, according to a news release from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen identified the man as Derek Oliver Griner, 33, of Hampton.

The man had been drinking alcohol when he went for a swim between Burkes Beach and Folly Field at about 9 p.m. and did not return, according to a news release early Sunday. The body was discovered just before a female acquaintance of the man called emergency dispatch to report he was not back.

Foul play is not suspected, according to the news release. An autopsy will be performed Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Allen said.
