Hilton Head Prep girls overpower Porter-Gaud to win state tennis title

Dolphins repeat as SCISAA champions

The Hilton Head Preparatory School girls tennis team poses for a photo while celebrating their win Saturday in the SCISAA Class 3-A state championship match in Sumter.

Domination was the theme Saturday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, as the Hilton Head Prep girls tennis team blanked Porter-Gaud, 6-0, to complete their second straight unbeaten season and repeat as SCISAA Class 3-A state champions.

The Dolphins finish the season 14-0 and continue a 28-match unbeaten streak.

"All six girls dominated their match from the start," said Dolphins coach Job de Boer, whose girls lost just 12 games in six matches (72-12). "It was nothing short of a rout."

Hilton Head Prep once again played without its regular No. 3, Ellie Czura, who has been nursing an ailing knee.

"Porter-Gaud gave it all it had, but the Prep girls are just a couple of levels better," de Boer said.

Coming into the playoffs, several opposing coaches equated the Dolphins' talent level to a college team, and de Boer didn't shy away from the comparison.

That's bad news for the Dolphins' competition next season. Hilton Head Prep's No. 1 player, Mariana Gould -- a former home-schooled student who already has signed to play for the University of Georgia -- is one of only two seniors, along with Taylor Childress.

Sydnee Wheeler is a junior, Czura is a sophomore, Ellie Zimmermann is a junior, Catie Meighan is a freshman and Katie Rankin is a sophomore.

The Dolphins' road to the title was without bumps. After an 11-0 regular season, they earned a bye through Monday's first round.

Then on Wednesday, Hilton Head Prep beat Pinewood Prep, 6-0, at home without Gould, who was out of town, and the injured Czura.

On Friday in Sumter, Hilton Head Prep blanked Hammond School, 6-0. No Dolphin dropped a set, while Gould, Zimmermann and Meighan each won their matches without dropping a single game.
