The 22nd annual Hargray Hilton Head Island Bridge Run 10K/5K makes its return to the Lowcountry on Sunday morning, as hundreds of area runners will hit the pavement to raise money for the Special Olympics.

"It's an exciting race," said race organizer Mark Weisner. "We see a lot of the same families every year. It's a lot of fun to put on."

This year's race will start and finish at Crossings Park and guide runners over the Broad Creek Bridge and up the Cross Island Parkway. Action will start at 8 a.m., and those who have yet to register can do so prior to the race from 6:30 to 7:30 for $35.

All those competing will receive a Hargray Hilton Head Island Bridge Run Salty Dog Cafe Tech-shirt.

"It looks like it's going to be a beautiful day for a run," Weisner said.

Over 400 people are expected to run this year, with the top three finishers spanning 13 age different divisions slated to receive awards. Those will be handed out during the post race party which will also feature live music from Craig Coyne, refreshments and door prizes.

Participants can run or walk in the 5K while the 10K is a run only, Weisner said.

Those not taking part in the run should be mindful of the road changes taking effect. Traffic will be reduced to one lane from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Palmetto Bay Road from Target Road heading west over the Cross Island Expressway to the toll booths, which will remain open during the race. Bow Circle, Target Road and Marshland Road also will be affected, according to a release.

Those who are running will once again be contributing to a race that has raised over $40,000 for the Special Olympics since 1992.

"It's a great charity," Weisner said. "It helps kids and it promotes sports for kids that have disabilities. It's a fabulous tie-in for a race like this."
