Bobcats play clean vs. Ashley Ridge, end 2-game skid

mmccombs@islandpacket.comOctober 19, 2013

For Bluffton coach Ken Cribb, the differences between Friday's 41-28 win over Ashley Ridge and last week's 35-27 loss at the hands of county rival Beaufort High were simple.

"We didn't panic and continue to shoot ourselves in the foot all night long," Cribb said. "We didn't turn the ball over so they could score."

Instead the Bobcats (5-3, 1-1 Region 8-AAAA) played a steady, turnover-free ball game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

It took three drives for Bluffton to get its offense going, but when it did, it was big.

Alex Davis tossed a screen pass to Terrance Heyward, and Heyward turned it into a 98-yard touchdown. The Bobcats would never lose the lead.

"I thought we threw the ball well ran the ball well, mixed it up," Cribb said. "Took what they would give us."

Davis was effective, completing 11 of 22 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns, while Heyward finished the night with 131 yards on four catches.

Sandwiched in between the passing scores were three rushing touchdowns -- two by B.J. Hill and 5-yarder by Davis when the Bobcats employed the polecat formation on third-and-goal.

Hill, who led the Bobcats on the ground, credited his offensive line.

"They were doing everything right, making great holes," Hill said. "They deserve the credit, and I'm happy for them.

On defense, the Bobcats intercepted the Swamp Foxes' Chandler Avenel three times to end scoring threats.

"Gotta keep winning," said Cribb, focused on the playoffs. "Win two more and we're in."
