Pat Child is the captain of the Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island's 55 and Over 9.0 mixed doubles team that won the USTA state championship this past weekend in Aiken.

But Child wasn't able to play with the team and won't be making the trip to USTA sectionals later this month in Little Rock, Ark.

And that's OK.

Child instead played last weekend on the state champion 40 and Over 9.0 mixed doubles team that won the 2013 USTA Southern Mixed Doubles Sectional Championship on Sunday in Mobile, Ala.

Captained by Mike O'Regan out of Rose Hill Plantation's Tennisclub of the Lowcountry, the 40 and over squad advanced to the USTA Senior Mixed Invitationals to be held April 11-13, 2014, in Maui, Hawaii.

"The whole goal of going to Mobile was to have Maui in our sights," said O'Regan, acknowledging the high cost of the trip, "so we're going to try and make it work."

O'Regan said the team has to decide by January whether or not to accept the bid.

"They give you until April to plan, so I think they did that for a reason."

The team, comprised of O'Regan, Child, Matt Wuller, Gavin Cox, Jan O'Neill, Julie Child, Donna Bierschenk and Michelle Clark, was 4-0 in round robin play, winning every match 2-1.

Cox, like Pat Child, was a member of the 40 and Over and the 55 and Over teams.

Pat Child said the USTA would help the team a little financially, but the rest they'd have to make up on their own.

"We may do some kind of clinics for donations," said O'Regan, who's one of four teaching pros on the team. "We haven't really come up with a plan. It's too soon. ... But we'll put on our thinking caps."

As for the 55 and Over team, Pat Child said they were not going to be able to travel to the sectionals in Little Rock.

Like the 40 and Over team, the 55 and Over squad -- made up of Robert Tillison, Guenter Bergmann, Lori Bergmann, Mary Jackson, Cindy Vander Berg, Vicki Nagy and William Sturm, as well as Child and Cox -- went 4-0 at the state tournament, defeating teams from Charleston ad Columbia twice each.

"Locally, you can say we had a good weekend," Pat Child said.
