The S.C. State University Board of Trustees elected William Small Jr. of Yemassee its new chairman Monday.

Small, a retired educator and small farmer, outpaced Vice Chairman Robert Waldrep, an attorney, for the position. Waldrep had served as interim chairman following the departure of Walter Tobin in June.

"I feel extremely privileged to have an opportunity to serve the people of South Carolina in this capacity," Small said in a news release.

Small was appointed to the board in July and will complete the former chairman's term until the next election of officers in September, the release said.
