A man was hospitalized because of smoke inhalation after a fire early Friday in a Hardeeville apartment.

The fire was controlled by responders from Hardeeville, Bluffton and Ridgeland fire departments. Fire hoses stretched across U.S. 17, shutting down the highway for several hours.

"We got the call at 4 a.m. and had it under control within about 30 minutes," Hardeeville Fire Chief Dan Morgan said.

Most of the fire and smoke damage was limited to three of the complex's nine apartments, Morgan said.

The fire is under investigation, but it did not appear to be set intentionally, according to Morgan. An occupant who had just been evicted was still inside the apartment when the fire started, Morgan said.
