The United Way of the Lowcountry has raised nearly $866,800 -- 37.69 percent of its goal of $2.3 million for its annual campaign.

"Our official kickoff a few weeks ago was a success, and I think these numbers represent the positive direction this year's campaign is headed," said Tina Gentry, president and CEO of United Way of the Lowcountry, in a news release.

In 2013, the United Way helped fund 44 programs in 33 partner agencies that address health, education, income and basic needs, the release said. It also continued an early grade-reading program started in 2012 in eight schools in Beaufort and Jasper counties.

To contribute to United Way, go to uwlowcountry.org or call 843-982-3040 in Beaufort, 843-837-2000 in southern Beaufort County, or 843-645-6500 in Jasper County.
