School bus breaks down on S.C. 170

No one was injured in a bus breakdown Thursday morning while the bus was taking 24 students to school.

The bus broke down on Lemon Island along S.C. 170 on its way to Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence, Beaufort County School District spokesman Jim Foster said.

The bus driver noticed smoke coming from the back of the bus when the driver pulled over and evacuated the students, Foster said.

The cause of the smoke was a blown turbocharger, he said, but there was no damage to the bus.

A substitute bus was sent to pick up the students -- from Whale Branch Early College High School and Battery Creek High School -- and took them to ACE.
