"Sandman" will be part of the student exhibit and sale Oct. 10 at the Sam Doyle Celebration Night at Penn Center.

The Sam Doyle Celebration Night will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 10 at Penn Center, 16 Penn Center Circle West, on St. Helena Island. The event will include a display of the Sam Doyle Collection and a student art show and sale to benefit Penn Center and ARTworks continuing education scholarships.

Born in 1906 on St. Helena Island, Sam Doyle was a self-taught artist. He documented life on the island with house paint and honesty, scraps of tin and a strong sense of humanity. He attended Penn School and later painted a series in honor of that historic cultural institution, part of his career-long theme of commemorating achievement in his community. His work is now much sought-after worldwide. The Sam Doyle Celebration is a partnership among ARTworks, Penn Center, the Red Piano Too gallery and Gordon W. Bailey.

Tickets are $25.
