Friday was a good day for Alexandra Mueller at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Women's $10,000 tournament on Hilton Head Island.
First, the fourth-seeded Mueller, a two-time U.S. Open qualifier (2010, 2012), held off 17-year-old Florida signee Peggy Porter, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to Saturday's semifinals. There, she will face top-seeded Ulrikke Eikeri at 10 a.m. Norway's Eikeri advanced by blanking fifth-seeded Maria-Fernanda Alves of Brazil, 6-0, 6-0.
Wild cards Ellie Halbauer and Raveena Kingsley, both winners Friday, will face off in the other singles semifinal at 10 a.m.
Mueller later teamed with doubles partner Jillian O'Neill for a nice semifinal upset Friday. The fourth-seeded duo knocked off the top-seeded pair of Alves and Eikeri, 6-3, 2-6, (10-8) to advance to Saturday's final.
It's been a good year so far for Mueller. She qualified for the main singles draw of the July WTA event in Washington, D.C., won the June $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Buffalo, N.Y., and has won three of her eight career doubles titles this year.
She'll have a chance to add to her career doubles wins Saturday when she and O'Neill face on the second-seeded pair of Kristi Boxx and Abigail Guthrie at 1 p.m.
Boxx and Guthrie defeated Emma Hayman and Michelle Sammons, 6-3, 6-3, in the other semifinal.
