A 42-year-old Ridgeland man was charged with attempted murder Tuesday, following an assault involving a handgun.

Stanley L. Ferguson was arrested after deputies responded to a disturbance about 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Grahamville Road, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

Ferguson allegedly attacked Marvin McNair, 42, of Ridgeland. It was not immediately clear whether his wounds were inflicted by a bullet or by being struck by the handgun, Chief Deputy Roy Hughes said.

McNair was conscious and alert at the scene and was transported by helicopter to a hospital, Hughes said.

"It appears a weeklong argument culminated in one individual assaulting the other," he said. "The victim said the gun did go off, but we still haven't substantiated that yet."
