Don't delay improving cellphone service

info@islandpacket.comSeptember 30, 2013

Cellphone service continues to be significant problem in many areas of Hilton Head Island. This is particularly true in some gated communities, such as Hilton Head Plantation.

In the summer of 2011, the newly formed Telecommunications Task Force sat down with regional executives from Verizon and AT&T to discuss the roadblocks to improving cellphone service on the island. Since then, we have been working with the town and Hilton Head Plantation in particular to remove those roadblocks and to improve service there.

The proposed tower off Dolphin Head Drive will be designed to look like a pine tree and to blend into the existing tree canopy. It will result in a dramatic improvement in cellphone coverage for thousands of residents. If there is a significant delay, it will damage our new relationship with the carriers and delay the improved service for those residents.
