Bluffton girls win region swim meet

CROSS COUNTRY

Low Country Invitational: Hilton Head Island High School's Cisco Ferre finished second individually to lead the Seahawk boys to a third-place team finish Saturday in the Low Country Invitational cross country meet at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Johns Island.

Marietta (Ga.) won both the boys and girls meets, which had 36 teams competing.

Ferre finished the 5-kilometer course in a time of 15 minutes, 47 seconds. He was the first of four Seahawks to place in the top 25.

Beaufort High's Brandon Pratt was the second best runner from the area, placing 10th in a time of 16:10.

Bluffton's boys were 17th, Beaufort was 20th, Hilton Head Prep was 28th and Whale Branch finished 34th.

The Hilton Head High girls finished fifth in the team standings, led by top-25 finishes from eighth-graders Mallory Liggett and Abby Gross.

Bluffton's girls were 25th, Hilton Head Prep took 28th and Battery Creek was 33rd.

SWIMMING

Region 8-AAAA Meet: Bluffton's girls won the region championship, finishing well ahead of Ashley Ridge for the title, while Bluffton's boys finished second to Fort Dorchester.

Beaufort High was fifth in both the boys and girls divisions.

Danielle Faciszewski led the way for Bluffton's girls, taking first place in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races. Abigail Hess also had a win, claiming the 100 freestyle title.

John Evans (500 freestyle) and Jake Minasi (100 backstroke) won events for the Bluffton boys.

Will Bootle was Beaufort's top finisher, taking fourth in the boys 500 freestyle. Mary Margaret Barras had the top finish for a Beaufort girl, finishing fifth in the 100 butterfly.

Beaufort Academy: The Eagles competed in the First Baptist Invitational in Charleston, with the boys finishing fourth out of eight teams and the girls placing sixth out of nine teams.

Grant Hetherington had a pair of top-five finishes individually for the BA boys, while Madeleine Gray had a pair of top-five finishes for the girls, and also helped them take second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Beaufort Academy's next action will be the SCISAA state meet on Oct. 12 in Augusta, Ga.
