The Thomas Heyward Academy football team came alive in the second half Friday night in Dalzell, rolling past Thomas Sumter Academy, 42-6, with the help of a pair of interception returns.

Davis Owens, who had two interceptions on the night, returned one 40 yards for a score after halftime. Zach Belger added a 30-yard interception return for the Rebels (4-2).

Thomas Heyward led 7-6 at the half after Seth Jones' 10-yard touchdown reception from Owens. The Rebels then outscored the host Generals 35-0 after the break.

"We made a few adjustments at halftime and finally got it rolling in the second half," Rebels coach Nic Shuford said. "We threw the ball a little more tonight, took some chances."

Owens was 6 of 11 passing, for 114 yards and three touchdowns. Jones had two of the scoring catches and Anthony Sanders had the other.

Jared Rountree finished with 15 rushes for 72 yards, and Collin Roach had a rushing touchdown.

Roach also had an interception on defense -- one of four the Rebels made against a Generals offense that surprised Shuford a bit with an aerial attack.

"They had some success early," Shuford said. "A lot of the drives they had going ended in interceptions, fortunately."

Thomas Heyward plays at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's in Savannah.
