An 80-year-old St. Helena Island man faces a felony assault-and-battery charge, accused of firing a gun near a woman's head.

George Milton Rayner was walking his dog on Sept. 15 when it jumped onto a vehicle, damaging its paint, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. Rayner, who agreed to pay for the repairs, reportedly visited the victim's Bay Point Road home early Thursday to deliver a check for $300 when the car's owner told him the repairs had cost $322.

After Rayner refused to pay the difference, he allegedly pulled a pistol from his pocket and fired the gun next to the victim's ear, according to an incident report. The woman, who was uninjured, left with her husband before calling the Sheriff's Office.
