Make grand statement with welcome to island

info@islandpacket.comSeptember 26, 2013

What a great idea to beautify and define the gateway to Hilton Head Island with a fountain and monument. ("New Hilton Head entry with dolphin fountain proposed," Sept. 21)

We all know the Bluffton Parkway flyover will be concrete -- just as are the existing J. Wilton Graves Bridge and the Cross Island Parkway. So why not shift any planned (is there any?) beautification of concrete (lipstick on a pig) and focus on the natural entrance to our special home?

Let's make visitors and residents welcome as they drive onto the island and not worry about the highways and shopping centers beyond. Unfortunately, the Bluffton area corridor has scant greenbelt buffer where the mega-businesses are located. The center median of U.S. 278 should be kept neat and green, but the special treat for vacationers and owners is escaping over the bridge and entering into our natural paradise. Let's define our island and build a grand "welcome" to all.
