The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a death at a Hilton Head Island condominium complex.

No foul play is suspected in the death at Forest Beach Villas, according to Sgt. Robin McIntosh, who initially called it a suicide. McIntosh said later in the day that the cause of death was unknown.

Residents reported a heavy police presence in the area, but McIntosh said no standoff took place. However, a SWAT team sent a robot inside the apartment ahead of officers to ensure their safety, McIntosh said.

She would not identify the deceased or say why authorities were called to the apartment in the first place.

The victim was already dead when the robot, operated by SWAT team members, entered the apartment.
