Battery Creek and Hilton Head Island high schools received National Award of Excellence Certificates from the South Caroina High School League in recognition for their "outstanding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity."

The certificate is given on behalf of the Board of Directors of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NFHS Citizenship Committee. The winners are chosen by region, with Battery Creek winning Region 6-AA and Hilton Head Island claiming the Region 8-AAA award.

"The National Federation of State High School Associations is committed to providing young people with opportunities to develop into productive citizens," NFHS executive director Robert F. Kannaby said in a release. "Our mission is to teach high school students the spirit and as a result make a positive difference in their lives and in our communities." "I told the assistant athletic directors and coaches that it's a great tribute to them and to our athletes that the kids work hard every day to represent Battery Creek High School in a positive manner," Battery Creek athletics director John Drafts said. "And, of course, any recognition you get for something like this is gratifying."

Hilton Head Island athletics director Joe Monmonier said it's evidence the school's peers pay attention to how it goes about its business.

"It shows that we show integrity, we show sportsmanship, and when we win region titles, we show good sportsmanship," Monmonier said. "Not only do we win, we win with some class, integrity and some dignity.

"It also shows our peers and our region have some respect for us. It's about winning with class. Sometimes for me, this is maybe more important that winning the Director's Cup. It means our peers and our region ADs think we're doing a decent job."

To determine the winners, each school submitted to the SCHSL a region opponent they felt represented outstanding sportsmanship during the school year. This, along with the officials reports for each school, was used to determine the region winners for the year.
