Afternoon wreck on US 278 backed up traffic

A wrecked car is loaded onto a tow truck on Monday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. near the entrance to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge on the bridge leading to Hilton Head Island. The wreck blocked both lanes of traffic heading eastbound on U.S. 278 for more than an hour.

A three-vehicle crash on U.S. 278 eastbound near the bridge to Hilton Head Island slowed traffic in both directions Monday afternoon. No one was seriously injured.

The accident happened at about 1 p.m., causing traffic to back up to the Tanger Outlet centers in Bluffton, tying up traffic for about an hour, according to Bluffton Township Fire District spokesman Capt. Randy Hunter.

The scene was cleared by about 2:20 p.m., according to a tweet from the Beaufort County Emergency Management Department.

Those driving or riding in the vehicles involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the accident.
