A Hilton Head Island couple's plan to sell their vintage Volkswagen went up in smoke Saturday afternoon when the bus caught fire in their driveway.

A man had been coming to 14 Old House Creek Drive periodically to start the blue, 1978 Type 2 and keep it in running shape, according to Joheida Fister, spokeswoman for the Town of Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue Division.

Shortly after he turned on the car Saturday afternoon and went inside the home, he heard what he described as an explosion and found the vehicle engulfed in flames, Fister said.

Firefighters responded about 1:45 p.m. and extinguished the fire, which had spread to an SUV parked in the driveway and singed the roof of the garage.

Fister said the cause of the fire was not immediately clear but that most of the flames were centered around the VW's engine.

An estimate of the damages was not available, she said. No injuries were reported.
