US 278 construction big thrill ride for drivers

info@islandpacket.comSeptember 20, 2013

Just a note of thanks to Hector, Bubba, Billy Bob and Daryl for taking time from their "Gator Boys" and "Moonshiners" TV reality shows to come to the Bluffton area to widen U.S. 278.

Although it's obvious they are learning as they go, they've made our daily treks to and from Hilton Head Island a real thrill ride. Plus their placement of those plastic barrels has given us lots of extra hair-raising thrills when trying to find cross-overs. You just can't get excitement like that short of a costly weekend trip to Busch Gardens.

I also want to give a big thank you to the engineering firm of Dewey, Cheatum & Howe, who must have submitted the low bid for the design of the new traffic patterns. Not bad for what I'm convinced is their first attempt in high way design after all those years in amusement park engineering.

The short deceleration lanes and removal of merging lanes is giving the residents of some of our neighborhoods a real NASCAR-like experience, not to mention future job security for our emergency responders.

With every passing month, the Hilton Head-Bluffton area just gets more and more exciting to live and travel in. Man, I just can't wait for that "flyover" construction. Who needs a zip line when you have U.S. 278?
