Make sure you're ready for voting law changes

Sept. 24 is National Voter Registration Day. The League of Women Voters Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Area provides many opportunities for voter registration throughout the year at a variety of venues, such as farmers markets, local high schools and colleges and public libraries.

National Voter Registration Day is an appropriate time to remind citizens of South Carolina's new voter photo identification law. All registered voters must present one of five types of photo ID when voting:

  • A S.C. driver's license.

  • An ID card issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • A photo voter registration card obtained at the Beaufort County Board of Elections, 15 John Galt Road, Beaufort. (The office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 843- 255-6900; or go to 61B Ulmer Road Bluffton from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 843- 255-6940).

  • Federal military ID.

  • U.S passport.

  • If you are missing your photo ID on voting day, you may cast a provisional ballot after showing your non-photo voter registration card. You also will be advised about your recourse with the Board of Elections. Additional information is available at www.bcgov.net/vote, or call 843-255-6900.

Information about voter registration and the voter photo identification law helps assure all eligible voters will be actual voters in upcoming elections.
