South Carolina high school juniors and seniors can enter a writing contest to be judged by novelist Pat Conroy, who lives in Beaufort.

The contest, sponsored by the South Carolina Honors College and University of South Carolina Press, asks the students to answer the question: How should we improve the state of South Carolina?

The students' entries, in 750 words or less, can be essays, short stories, plays, poems or any other genre. The entries are due by noon Oct. 4 and will be evaluated on originality and quality of writing.

Winners will receive cash awards up to $1,000.
