A two-car wreck Tuesday morning on U.S. 278 near Burnt Church Road sent one passenger to the hospital with minor injuries.

Ella Soto, 29, was crossing U.S. 278 to enter Kittie's Crossing Shopping Center when her black Toyata Venza collided with a silver Mercedes C300 heading eastbound on the highway, Soto said.

The Mercedes smashed into Soto's passenger side, flipping her car once. Her car landed overturned near the entrance to the shopping center, she said.

Paramedics removed Joella Edwards, Soto's mother and the only passenger in the Toyota, from the car and took her to Hilton Head Hospital.

Soto said her mother was responsive and did not have any visible injuries. Soto was not injured in the wreck, she said.

Earl Swafford, the driver of the Mercedes, said by the time he hit the brakes it was too late. There were no other passengers in his car, he said.

At the scene, Swafford said he had chest pain from the deployed airbags.

The wreck occurred at about 8:30 a.m. and was cleared at about 9:50 a.m., according to the Beaufort County Emergency Management Department Twitter account.

Traffic was slowed for about 45 minutes, emergency personnel said.
