To the gentleman who is concerned that the U.S. 278 widening project is a poor project overall, I submit this response:
I have heard of no cost or scheduling overruns. I have traveled the road frequently during the entire process, both day and night, never once in standstill traffic, nor have I smelled the distinctive odor of asphalt. I have heard of no fatalities due to construction, which sometimes happens.
I am neither a road builder nor a heart surgeon, and I do not understand completely the details of either. I suggest he allow the project to be completed, review the above-mentioned facts and then make an informed decision about the entire process.
Today, more than 40,000 vehicles a day travel U.S. 278. Would he prefer the two-lane road we had in 1979 during the Hurricane David evacuation?
