Bluffton's John Patterson and Bob Engler carded 3-under-par 69s on Friday to join Irmo's Steve Liebler atop the leaderboard after the first round of the S.C. Golf Association's Mid-Amateur Championship at Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie.

They were among a group of 12 players -- six from Beaufort County -- to shoot even par or better.

Four golfers were a shot off the lead, including Kevin King and J.D. Hoft of Bluffton. Beaufort's Rob Simmons finished his round two shots behind the leaders, and Beaufort's Benji Gecy was another shot back after an even-par 72.

Defending champion Todd Hendley finished six back with a 75.

Second-round play resumes at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The final round is Sunday.

The Mid-Amateur, one of 19 major championships conducted by the SCGA, is in its 32nd year of existence.
