Simpsonville's Lea Venable made her move on Wednesday at the Women's S.C. Golf Association's 65th Women's Amateur Championship.

The Holly Tree Country Club member shot a 1-over-par 73 and took advantage of a rough round by defending champion Dawn Woodard of Greer to take a two-stroke lead on the Jack Nicklaus Course at Colleton River Plantation.

After a delay of 2 hours, 10 minutes for a thunderstorm, Venable -- who last won the title in 2006 -- put up three birdies and four bogeys in her round to finish with a two-round total of 143.

Thornblade Country Club's Woodard had three bogeys on the back nine and a double bogey on No. 9, which is playing as the hardest hole in the tournament. She finished at 5-over-par 77 for a two-round total of 145.

Ashley Rose, of North Augusta and Mount Vintage Plantation, tied Venable's round of 73 for a two-round total of 152.

Bluffton's Jennifer Adams of Belfair Golf Club had the lone under-par round Wednesday and finished with a 71 for a two-round total of 155.

Thursday's final round opens with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
