The principal of Pritchardville Elementary School was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday, according to Beaufort County School District spokesman Jim Foster.

Charles Johnson is still the principal and will continue to earn his $88,568 salary, Foster said. The length of his leave has not yet been determined, and Foster said the reason for his leave cannot be disclosed because it is a personnel matter.

Tracy Grubbs, who has been an assistant principal at Michael C. Riley Elementary in Bluffton for seven years, has been appointed the interim principal at Pritchardville Elementary.

Superintendent Jeffrey Moss sent a letter home to the students' parents Wednesday afternoon informing them of Grubbs' new position but did not provide details about Johnson's situation.

He has been principal at the school since it opened in 2010.

Before he came to Pritchardville, Johnson taught first grade at Edisto Primary School for a year and taught second and fifth grades at Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary School in Beaufort for seven years. He was the assistant principal at Robert Smalls Middle School in Beaufort from 2006 to 2009.

Johnson also served in the Army for four years.
