5 golfers heading to US Mid-Amateur after qualifying at Chechessee Creek Club

Jeff Knox, William Lincicome, Stan Gann, Jr., William Mitchell and Kyle Milner III qualified Monday at Chechessee Creek Club to play in the 32nd US Mid-Amateur Championship.

Knox and Lincicome shared medalist honors by each firing 2-under 68 on the 6,610-yard Coore-Crenshaw layout in Okatie.

Travis Steed is the first alternate and Matt Laydon is the second alternate.

Eighty-three players competed for spots in the championship, which will be held Oct. 5-10 at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Ala..

Beaufort's Rob Simmons shot 71 to fall just outside. Beaufort's Matt O'Quinn and Hilton Head Island's Jordan Carpenter each shot 72.

Bluffton resident John Patterson, the director of sales and marketing at Chechessee Creek who played in the 2012 U.S. Mid-Am, shot 5-over 75 and failed to qualify.

Knox, an Augusta resident, is a past Georgia Mid-Am champion and serves as the noncompeting marker at the Masters. He fired a course-record 61 from Augusta National's member's tees in 2003.
