F-35B strong weapon for our military arsenal

A recent letter about the F-35B was full of inaccuracies. The author suggests "horrendous noise" from the aircraft will cause physical and emotional harm and decrease property values. He states that Russian and Chinese aircraft are better and drones are a replacement for fighter aircraft.

These statements degrade the best fighter aircraft in the world and our aircraft industry.

When the F-18 Hornets came to Beaufort, there were many newspaper stories about excess noise and decreasing property values. Beaufort is a beautiful, thriving community. The F-18 program has been a success, and the warplanes have been involved in hundreds of successful operations throughout the world. Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island have brought tremendous prestige to our area.

I speak from experience, having been an Air Force flight surgeon in Charleston. I have done sound surveys on the F-101 fighter and the Lockheed C130 Hercules. I have worked for the Department of Defense at Naval Hospital Beaufort. Human injury from noise was never an issue.

The remarkable F-35B will have horizontal and vertical take-off and landing capabilities. Its development took many years of complex aeronautical engineering. It is the most sophisticated fighter aircraft in the world. China has attempted to steal our aeronautical engineering technology through cyber warfare and has developed an inferior fighter aircraft.

Stating that drones reduce the need for manned fighter aircraft demonstrates how out of touch the author is regarding air warfare.
