Sole Mates, Furlong win top prize in Fripp Island Kingfish tournament

Captain Danny Furlong and his crew on the Sole Mates took first place Labor Day weekend in the 23rd annual Fripp Island Invitational Kingfish Tournament with a 34-pound kingfish.

Second place went to Captain Billy Powell and his crew on Low Country Native with a 31.4-pound king. Captain Chris Tilton and his crew on Full Tilt had a two-king aggregate of 46.4 pounds.

The largest Spanish mackerel, at 3 pounds, went to Captain Bill Turbeville and his crew on 3 Kings. In second was Captain Gus Brown and his crew on Last Cast.

The junior fisherman award, with a 32-pound amberjack, was won by Austin Flanders on Low Country Native.

Among the winners, $5,000 was awarded, while $3,500 was donated to charity.

Upcoming tournaments at Fripp Island Marina include the Inshore Owen Perry Tournament Oct. 25-26, as well as the Kids' Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday, Nov. 29.
