The American Red Cross Palmetto Service Center has added a class that helps train volunteers on how to respond in disaster situations.

The "New Volunteer and Disaster Overview Class" is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at City Hall in Beaufort. The session will last three hours, according to a news release from the Red Cross.

Four additional classes are scheduled for Sept. 14, Sept. 24, Oct. 8 and Oct. 24 at the Red Cross Palmetto Service Center in Bluffton at 59 Sheridan Park Circle.

In the class, volunteers will learn how to respond to individuals devastated by disasters such as home fires and how to help the community in the event of a large-scale disaster such as a hurricane.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should visit and click on "volunteer to register," or call the American Red Cross Palmetto Service Center: 843-757-7437.
