The S.C. Highway Patrol charged 12 motorists with driving under the influence in Beaufort and Jasper counties during the Labor Day weekend.

As part of its crackdown on drunken driving, the patrol set up a safety checkpoint Friday on U.S. 17 near the Georgia state line, said Bridget Wyant, Troop 6 spokeswoman.

Wyant said 12 DUIs was "quite a few." Berkeley and Charleston counties had only six in all, she said.
