Former Bluffton punter Sprouse makes South Carolina roster as walk-on

Former Bluffton High School football player Mallie Sprouse is among five walk-ons who were added to the University of South Carolina football roster on Tuesday.

Sprouse, a 6-foot, 195-pound freshman punter, will wear No. 46.

Gamecocks assistant Everette Sands reached out to Sprouse and Bluffton coach Ken Cribb several weeks ago in an effort to get Sprouse to come out for the team, strictly as a punter. Sprouse had worked with former USC kicker Adam Yates in the spring.

Sprouse, who turned down a scholarship offer from Presbyterian to attend South Carolina, was named the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette first-team all-area punter for 2012, when he averaged 38.4 yards per punt. He left 11 punts inside the opponents' 20 and had just one touchback.

Sprouse doesn't anticipate any playing time this season. He says he's focused on getting on the field for the 2014 season.

The other four Gamecocks walk-ons were sophomore wide receiver Andrew Bunch (5-11, 185, Bishop England, Presbyterian), freshman quarterback Grant Davitte (6-3, 190, Irmo), sophomore linebacker Cedrick Malone (6-0, 201, Camden, Coastal Carolina) and redshirt freshman fullback Brandon Sturdivant (6-2, 212, Nation Ford).

USC (1-0) continues practice on Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's SEC Eastern Division showdown with the No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs (0-1). Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. from Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.
