Red Cross very efficient with donated money

info@islandpacket.comSeptember 3, 2013

I was saddened to read an Aug. 26 letter to the editor. Ending an otherwise good letter, the writer stated, "Kindly do not suggest donating to the Red Cross; too much money goes for administration."

I suggest she go to charitynavigator.org. She will find that the American Red Cross spends 92 percent on program expenses; 4 percent on administrative costs; and 3.7 percent on fundraising expenses.

I have not been able to find another agency that can match these figures. Many people do not realize the Red Cross is not a government agency and performs its mission solely on the donations and generosity of the American public. The Red Cross is amazing in that it has 16 volunteers for every staff person. As a charitable organization, the Red Cross sees itself as a steward of your money.

I write this as a private citizen even though I am a current volunteer with the Red Cross in Savannah and a resident of Bluffton.
