Heritage distributes $2.1 million to charity

A new charitable-giving program introduced before the 2013 RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing allowed the Heritage Classic Foundation to direct more than $2.1 million in donations to hundreds of South Carolina nonprofit organizations, according to a foundation news release.

The new "Heritage Champions Fore Charity" program produced $602,500 for groups across South Carolina. Participating organizations urged supporters to make a minimum $1,000 donation to the Heritage Classic Foundation, which added 20 percent to each donation for the charity.

The Birdies For Charity program, created in 2000, had its most successful year in part because of the change in its format, the release said. Participating nonprofits encouraged supporters to pledge a donation for every birdie made by a PGA Tour pro during the tournament in April, and the foundation contributed an additional 20 percent. More than $687,000 was distributed through that program, bringing the total amount raised to $4.3 million since 2000.

Each year, volunteers from various civic organizations man the nine concession stands on the grounds at Harbour Town Golf Links. In 2013, they shared $192,000 in proceeds.
