A 28-year-old man is being treated at Beaufort Memorial Hospital for "extensive injuries" from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses helped investigators identify a suspect, and officers are looking for the person, a news release said. The Sheriff's Office did not name the suspect or the victim.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred before 3 p.m. Thursday outside a home on St. Helena Island's Saxonville Road as the victim stepped out of a vehicle. The victim was able to reach a nearby home, where deputies found him. He was taken to the hospital. Because of his injuries, he has given investigators only limited information, the release said.

Those with information about the crime can call Crime Stoppers at 843-255-3426.
