The Fraciscan Center on St. Helena Island has received a $15,000 grant to help its after-school program for needy children and its English and literacy classes for adults.

The money was awarded by the Sisters of Charity Foundation, which supports Catholic nuns in their efforts to help the poor and under-served members of society, according to a foundation news release.

The Franciscan Center is a Diocese of Charleston outreach program for poor residents in the Beaufort, Lady's Island and St. Helena areas, according to the center's website. It is staffed by two sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia.
