On Thursday, workers with APAC Southeast Inc. and S.C. Department of Transportation laid stone for the bridge lift that will eventually support the bridge expansion at Albergotti Creek Bridge in Beaufort.

The Albergotti Creek Bridge, a section of U.S. 21, as been on AAA Carolinas' list of the state's worst bridges for several years. This year, it came in as No. 10 on the list. AAA Carolinas' has called the bridge, which was built in 1948, "structurally deficient" and "functionally obsolete."

The bridge is being replaced with a wider, longer span as part of a $5 million S.C. Department of Transportation project. The work is scheduled to be finished by October 2015.
