Retired banker Steve Fobes is poised to fill a Beaufort County Council seat without anyone casting a ballot, according to elections officials.

When the party filing period closed Monday, the Hilton Head Island Republican was the only candidate from any party vying to replace Republican Steve Baer, who resigned the District 10 seat in July, according to Beaufort County Board of Elections and Voter Registration technician Kristina Weitz.

If no one declares their intent to run as a write-in candidate by Sept. 9 or as a petition candidate by Oct. 4, Fobes will be sworn in Dec. 6 without an election, according to state law.

County officials estimated before the close of the filing period that the special election -- which could have included party primaries, party runoffs and a Dec. 3 general election -- would cost between $24,000 and $36,000.

Fobes has said he would focus on county finances and improving economic development if he were to take on the position.

Attempts to reach him for comment Monday were unsuccessful.

The Beaufort County Board of Education's District 10 seat, which represents the same geographic area, also is vacant after the resignation of Mike Sanz.

A special election to fill that spot also would be Dec. 3.

To file for school board, candidates must submit a petition to the county elections board by Oct. 1 with signatures from at least 2.5 percent of active registered voters in the district, or 215 people, in this instance. Those wishing to file as a write-in candidate for school board must do so no later than Oct. 15.

It was not clear Monday whether anyone had filed for the nonpartisan seat.
