Daufuskie Island man facing cocaine charges after traffic stop

A Daufuskie Island man was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine after deputies stopped his golf cart for failing to use a turn signal Friday, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies pulled over 57-year-old Alfred Smith for failing to use a turn signal on his golf cart while making a left-hand turn from Old Haig Point Road to Cooper River Landing Road at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to the report.

During the traffic stop, Smith started to shake and began to move toward grocery bags and a cooler on the back of his cart, according to the report. The deputies had received a tip from locals that Smith would buy drugs on Hilton Head Island and bring them back to Daufuskie to sell to locals, the report said.

After asking for consent to search his golf cart, deputies found a bag containing eight grams of crack cocaine and one gram of cocaine inside the cooler. Smith initially told the deputies the drugs were for personal use, but later admitted he had collected money and bought the drugs to give out to friends.

Smith was arrested and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where he was released Saturday after posting a $20,000 bond, according to the jail log.

The following reports were released Sunday by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office:

  • Meadowlark Street: Air conditioning units worth $4,000 stolen.

  • Hickory Hill Road: Items worth $520 stolen from vehicle.
