Coligny Beach fountain not working, should be running soon

The fountain at the entrance of the Coligny Beach Park -- often a play spot for children -- has not been working for the past several days but should be up-and-running soon.

Town facilities manager Julian Walls said an impeller in the pump -- which pumps the water out of the fountain's jets -- failed several days ago. The town replaced the impeller Sunday, but the part was defective and failed Tuesday morning, he said.

Walls said Year Round Pool Company has ordered a new part, and the fountain should be running again by Wednesday or Thursday.

The cost of the original impeller replacement was $1,500, but he said the defective part was covered by warranty. The town checks the fountain every day, and Walls said a failure such as this typically is caused by wear-and-tear and sand that lodges in the fountain.
