An 18-wheeler crashed Tuesday at the Juanita M. White crosswalk on Interstate 95 in Ridgeland, causing a fuel spill.

The driver, Jack Jefferson Douglas, 63, of West Columbia, was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was in stable condition, according to a Ridgeland Police Department news release.

The wreck occurred at about 8 a.m., when Douglas ran off the left side of the road, striking the cable barriers, guardrail and bridge, the release said.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control spent most of the day cleaning diesel fuel that spilled from the truck, the release said.

DHEC spokeswoman Lindsey Evans said the department worked with a contractor on the clean-up of the diesel fuel, to minimize the impact on the environment and make sure state regulations were met in the cleanup and disposal.

Ridgeland police continue to investigate the wreck, and no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
