Man fends off attempted armed robbery

A Hilton Head Island man fended off an attempted armed robbery Sunday outside his home on Spanish Wells Road, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

The homeowner told deputies that a man tried to rob him at knifepoint at about 11 p.m. when he had walked out of his home on the 500 block of Spanish Wells Road to retrieve something from his car.

The suspect demanded money, and the homeowner replied he didn't have any. The suspect tried to stab him, but the man blocked the attack and ran down Spanish Wells Road.

The man sustained a minor cut to his hand and was treated at the scene.

The suspect ran toward Diamondback Road. He was described as black, between 25 and 30 years old, about 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, wearing a black shirt and blue shorts.

Anyone with information should call Investigator Cpl. B. Cooler at 843-255-3423 or Crime Stoppers at 888-274-6372.

Man hospitalized after shooting his leg at Beaufort nightclub

A 23-year-old man was hospitalized after he shot himself in the leg early Saturday, a Beaufort Police Department spokeswoman said Monday.

Beaufort police officers were handling a disturbance at about 2 a.m. at a club on Burton Hill Road after a patron refused to leave. That's when they heard the gunshot, Cpl. Hope Able said.

Officers found the man injured by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Able said.

A gun believed to have caused the injury was recovered, she added.

It is unclear if the man was inside or outside the club when he shot himself. An investigation continues and could result in charges, Able said.

No other injuries were reported.

St. Helena man charged with cocaine after stop

A St. Helena Island man was charged with crack cocaine and marijuana offenses after he was found with the drugs during a traffic stop for speeding Saturday in Burton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

Larry Jermaine Way, 29, was charged with possession with intent to distribute crack and marijuana after a vehicle in which he was a passenger was pulled over at 8:14 p.m. on Parris Island Gateway for going 50 mph in a 35-mph zone, the report said.

Deputies smelled marijuana and called for a K-9 unit, which found six ounces of marijuana and seven grams of crack cocaine inside a paper bag under his seat, the report said.

Way was released Sunday from the Beaufort County Detention Center after posting a $20,000 bond, according to the jail log.

Hilton Head woman charged with DUI after crash

A 42-year-old Hilton Head Island woman was charged with driving under the influence after she crashed her car into a ditch Sunday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The woman wrecked her Toyota Camry near the intersection of Spanish Wells and Jonesville roads at about 9:30 p.m. Deputies found her trying to back her car out of the ditch, the report said.

A man who had been driving behind her told deputies he thought she was intoxicated.

When the deputies told her the man had seen her driving fast, she responded, "Well, obviously. I'm in a ditch." She told deputies she had two glasses of wine.

She was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where a breath test determined she had a 0.30 blood-alcohol content level, the report said. South Carolina has a legal blood-alcohol content limit of .08 percent.

She was released from the detention center Monday, after posting a $2,267 recognizance bond, according to the jail log.
